1. A one- or two-sentence tentative lead for your final story, based on
the most interesting thing you've found in your data so far. You can
change your lead later on if you find something more interesting in
your data.
Breaking and Entering counts as one of the largest offence in Canada. Home is considered to be the safest place for an individual to live and, the citizens should have the right to feel protected in their own house. However, British Columbia has seen a significant decrease in break-ins when compared to other provinces.
2. A link to an Excel spreadsheet showing a small slice of your data that
backs up your lead and could be used as the basis for a Datawrapper
chart.

3. The name of one expert you could interview for your story. This can
be an academic, activist or someone from the agency that produced
the data. But it must be a named individual, with job title included.
I plan to interview Alexander Ejsmont, who serves as the criminal defense lawyer in Vancouver. He has defended many Break and Enter cases and holds extensive experience in this area.
Interesting choice of a Datawrapper graphic, but I’m not sure if I get what you’re trying to say. The lead says break-ins in B.C. decrease more than in other provinces, but in the graphic it’s right in the middle, only above sparsely populated provinces. Maybe I’m getting something wrong?
ReplyDeleteI think this is an interesting topic, that people would like to read. I find myself confused, between the lead and the chart -- are we looking at how break-ins are decreasing, in whole, within the country?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Parker, focus on how and why break-in have decreased in BC. I think that's where your story really is. It would be worth talking to someone from the RCMP as well as the other contact you have listed.
ReplyDeleteHey Huda! I think this a great story topic. I know people will want to read it, people are always interested in home safety. I am a bit confused, however, looking at your data chart in comparison to your lead. I think the chart and the lead are a bit conflicting. I agree with both Chloe and Parker - focus on how and why break-in have decreased in BC.
